Smart Contact Lens That Measure Glucose Levels For Diabetics From Google X

Top secret lab! One will easily say “Google X” Yes! We knew Google X is a secret lab where we are going to see lots of interesting projects which could change the world completely what we perceive today. The future is being imagined.

Google is just announcing the life changing projects one by one slowly. First, we saw a self-driving car, Google glass and then a balloon on the stratosphere. And Google has repeatedly denied working on a Space Elevator. Google X projects are often referred to as “Moonshots” within the company.

Yesterday the company just announced an exciting project where “Smart” contact lens to measure glucose level for diabetics. It’s not like a miniaturized version of Google Glass. It’s meant to help diabetes patients keep track of their glucose levels. Inside the lens is a miniaturized wireless chip and glucose monitor that will measure the glucose levels of the wearer’s tears…

According to WHO (World Health Organization) about 347 million people worldwide have diabetes and they predict that diabetes will be the 7th leading cause of death in 2030. Google took an initiative with their beautiful minds.

Many people are managing their diabetes is like having a part-time job. Glucose levels change frequently with normal activity like exercising or eating or even sweating. Sudden spikes or precipitous drops are dangerous and not uncommon, requiring round-the-clock monitoring. Although some people wear glucose monitors with a glucose sensor embedded under their skin, all people with diabetes must still prick their finger and test drops of blood throughout the day. It’s disruptive, and it’s painful. And, as a result, many people with diabetes check their blood glucose less often than they should.

So, Google has started testing a smart contact lens that’s built to measure glucose levels in tears using a tiny wireless chip and miniaturized glucose sensor that are embedded between two layers of soft contact lens material. And prototypes that can generate a reading once per second.

It’s still early days for this technology, but Google has completed multiple clinical research studies which are helping to refine the prototype. That’s Google.

We at Zombies Lounge predict that this is just an initiative and hope Google will take this to the whole new level. Solving the real world problem should be the ultimate aim for all the tech giants. Hope we will see projects like this in near future.
